BYTE

command

Read or write one byte of a string variable. Positions are 1-based; position 1 is the first character.

value = BYTE(strvar, pos) BYTE(strvar, pos) = value

strvar - a string variable or array element pos - byte position 1..255 value - replacement byte 0..255

The read form returns the character code, or 0 when the position is past the end of the string. The assignment form writes the byte; when pos is beyond the current end the string is padded with spaces first.

Example:

S$ = "ABC"
PRINT BYTE(S$, 1)
BYTE(S$, 2) = 90
PRINT S$
